Kanya Cuff - Needlepoint Kit -

The story behind the name of this cuff is a bit strange. Our daughter, Nina, was born in Cambodia. We met her for the first time through a photograph that came to us in the mail. Upon opening that envelope, hands trembling, we looked at the most amazing little three-month-old baby, with wide dark eyes and a beautiful dark brown complexion. Of course we were already in love, even before the photo, but now we could put a face to the emotions that were coming at us, full force. At the bottom of the photo, her nanny was holding a sign. It said - Koun Nga. That was the name they gave her at the orphanage when she was brought in. We weren’t sure how to pronounce the name. We asked anyone we knew with a Cambodian connection but no matter how many times we heard the name, we still couldn’t pronounce it quite right. The combination of letters Ng has a guttural sound from a place that we could not quite find in our throats. Still, I wanted to design a piece and name it after our little one. If I had a hard time pronouncing the name, wouldn’t others find it challenging as well? I decided to make the pronunciation as simple as possible, as easy as possible for our Western palettes. I called it Kanya, not quite the same, but beautiful as well.
